And any other maintenence details, I already have had her injections doneHow often do dogs need they're nails clipped ?
you cant put a time scale on to it, some dogs where them down when they are walking others need them cutting, you will be able to tell, when you dog jumps up if there nail hurts your leg, its time.
Regarding other maintance, you have bathing- again as and when they need it, teeth daily, needs to be cleaned with dog toothpaste not humans as it is dangerous for dogs, clean eyes, some dogs have runny eyes, clean ears, worming tablet depends on make to how often, i use milbermax from the vets, this is every 3 months, flee treatment, i use frontline from the vets this is every 3 months. Then of course daily brushing, hope this helps. Have fun with your puppy. MariaHow often do dogs need they're nails clipped ?
How often your dog needs its nails clipped depends on how fast they grow and what types of walks it has. dogs walked on concrete tend to need their nails clipped less often than dogs walked mostly on grass. Some dogs need their nails done every few months, but some never need them doing. If your dog has a white nail you can see the pink quick which will make it easier to judge when they need cutting. If your dog's nails are all black they would need clipping if they are obviously hitting the floor when the dog walks. As a dog gets older they tend to need their nails clipped more often as they do less walking, also sometimes one or more nails grow badly and curl round (dew claws usually) and need keeping an eye on. If you can book apopintments with a nurse at your vet practice you can get a demonstration of nail clipping and also discuss routine healthcare.
Other maintenance details to consider are: flea/tick control, worming (every 3 months in the adult, every month in puppies under 6 months of age), kennel cough vaccination, training, neutering, and also insurance is very important. Again, your veterinary practice should be able to advise you about all these. I would definitely recommend getting your wormers and flea control from your vet rather than a pet shop, as you then know you are buying a product that works.
It really depends on the dog. You can look at the nails, and see where the 'quick' is (That's the blood vessel/nerve that runs through it) - its darker, sometimes a little red. You never want to clip close to that - its very painful and it will bleed for a long time. Usually every 6 weeks is a good standard to go by. But if you walk your dog outside a lot, that may keep them short enough that they will only need it ever 3 months or so. I have a greyhound, and we started getting his clipped every 6 weeks, but now that I walk him 2 miles a night, the walking keeps them clipped well enough so that we don't have to do it often. We only bring him to the vet to shape them, to get the splits taken off, things like that.
Another thing, you should brush your dogs teeth every once in a while. I bring my dog to petsmart. For $12, they will clip his nails, brush his teeth and clean his ears. I do it every few months. Plus it takes the gross smell out of his mouth for a few hours lol.
Hope this helps!
Dog's toenails grow constantly, making it necessary to regularly clip them, just as you do yours.
How often you need to trim your dog's nails will depend on how active they are and in what environment. If your dog walks often on hard surfaces such as concrete, then her nails will be worn down by the friction, and will hence not need to be clipped as regularly as a dog that walks on softer surfaces
You do not want the nail to be protruding past the paw pads. When your dog is standing on the ground, check that her nails sit just above the ground. If they are touching the ground, they need to be trimmed. If you can hear a nail scratching or clicking sound as your dog runs around at home, then you should trim her nails.
If you do not cut your dog's nails often enough, you may force your dog to walk badly, causing a lot of pain.Nails that grow too long can curl under and cut into your dog's foot, or they can get caught and break, causing pain and bleeding. If the soft quick inside your dog's nail is injured and exposed, it will get infected!!
If the dog is exercised regualrly on a hard surface like concrete or pavement it will probably never need its nails clipping - except for the dew claws if they haven't been removed. They need clipping when the ends are very sharp or starting to curl round.
Mainetenance depends on type of dog - floppy eared long haired dogs need much more than short coated dogs with erect ears!
With respect to 'Dan' - how long is a piece of string? My two dogs are walked together on a mixed hard surface/grass trip. This keeps our Cavaliers nails short but our Jack Russells grow quicker and still need a clip once every 3 weeks or so. Please DO NOT forget the dew Claws of the side of the leg, any vets will have had dogs in where these have been forgotten and have grown into a circle and started digging into flesh - or worse.
Weekly to every other week.... in my experience.
I've never had walks grind down nails effectively..... and I've taken dogs on 4 mile walks along the road....still needed to physically trim the nails. In my experience.
Hand trimmers do fine....some dogs don't like the pressure on their nails in which case a Dremmel tool might work better. You can spend extra $$ on an official ';dog nail grinder';....but honestly, the Dremmel tool from the hardware department is precisely the same exact thing..... I have had both.
Check out your local library for books on basic dog care. You'll get a great reference and it won't cost much (just gas).
some road work each day the dog may never need its nails clipped I have kept dogs for38 years and none of them have needed nail clipping. remember to groom the dog regularly and make sure it is treated for fleas and wormed as advised by your vet.
Exactly what jojo said, providing they get walked enough they should stay short i have never had to clip any of my dogs nails purely because they chase each other round the garden and go for 1-2 walks a day.
My dogs get their nails trimmed every other week. Their yard is dirt, grass and sand, and we live on a dirt road, so there is no concrete to help keep them filed a little.
all the people that said they need cut often, just like a humans...YOUR WRONG,
my dogs are 3 and 4 and never had there nails cut, you just need to make sure you walk them PROPERLY everyday.
As long as they get regular exercise, they don't need their nails clipped, the only other thing you need to do, is worm them.
I do all my dogs nails as soon as I can hear them on my floors. I check about every 2 weeks or so but sometime's they need to be done sooner.
take it walkies more often and they don't need it. I take mine to the pub everyday, a half of Guinness makes his coat shiny.
brush coat every day
Well it depends but when you think they are getting to long just give them a quick clip
i do my dogs every month if that helps
they dont if you take them regular walks the friction against the pavement keeps them short enough.
some r different,u should no just by look at them, just like ours
every three to four weeks
i clip my dogs each week
Never.
