Get some pure 100% acetone nail polish remover. Or what I do which is probably not the best thing is I cut off the length of the nail then i kinda try to bite off the rest. whatever you do dont rip them off. Be very careful. Acetone will work, or any nail polish remover with acetone that is a good brand. It will soften. You can put something in between the natural nail and acrylic nail if their is lifting, like a nail that already fell off and gently slide it through so it can detach. You can have longer nails on your right hand (your picking and strumming hand, assuming you play right-handed). In fact, if you fingerpick the guitar, you'll want some (carefully trimmed) fingernails on your right hand.





On your left hand (the hand you press down the strings with to make chords and notes), you'll probably find long nails are a real obstacle. They usually get in the way and make it really, really difficult to play properly. I mean, you can try playing guitar with your fingernails at their present length but you're likely to have problems with them.





And if you're going to clip off the nails on your left hand, you'll need to at least trim the nails on your right hand so that your two hands look at least somewhat the same.





Sooooo......you have to decide which is more important -- long manicured fingernails, or playing the guitar? Its up to you........Can you have long finger nails to play the guitar?
you can play the guitar with acrylic or gel nails as long as they are relatively short because your nails are stronger w/ the gel. you will have to keep the nails up regularly and don't miss nail appointments

if you're using your left hand to fret the guitar (push down the string, whatever) then you can't have really long nails, if they go over your finger then I think they;re too long, you see you push the string down and if your nail is longer than you finger when you try to push the string down then I guess you'll be using your nail or you'll bend the nail against the neck or the nail will keep your finger from pushing the string down..... so yeah, your right hand however(or left if you strum with the left hand, can be as long as you want, so long as you use the ';proper'; way to hold the pick.





But just remember that if you want to use your nails to actually pick the guitar you'll need longer nails and you'll probably want them trimmed. I knew a teach who had special nails done just to play the guitar.
You will find your fingernails will get grooves in them.. they will not only be unsightly but they make it harder to play.





I have never understoon why it is you people want to learn how to play guitar, but you never want to make any sacrifices... Your fingers get SORE.. your fingernails get GROOVED... you keep touching other strings with your long nails so the sound is terrible.





Either you want to be able to play the guitar or you want pretty nails.. but YOU CAN'T DO BOTH.. and the choice is YOURS.

No I think you will be fine...you just have to make sure the contact is away from the actual tip of your finger, and try it more on the pads of your fingers....I find it easier that way in the first place.

Well as I too have contacts, I understand. Here's what you do, learn to use the sides of you fingertips yo remove your contacts. It takes a little time and practice, but once you get the hang of it, you can have the nails on both of your hands anyway you want it.

it doesn't matter if you go to get them removed at a salon because they are still going to be weak and brittle (contrary to what people here have told you) Use an acetone based nail polish remover and soak them for about 5 minutes (stop sooner if it burns) that should loosen them up. DO NOT try to pry them off (especially with your mouth ewww) if they wont budge wait about 10 minutes and then do another soak then try to take them off again.

You have to get the nail polish remover that HAS acetone, if you goto a Beauty Supply Store (Harmon, Sally) they sell a special remover for acrylic nails. KISS I believe is the brand name.
It's probably best to pay a little extra to have them removed, but....as a former nail tech go to the beauty supply buy some straight acetone and starting soaking. Cut the nails down as far as possible first. Soak them the use an cutilce pusher to remove the excess. Keep repeating and until you remove it all. It will take awhile, but be patient. Once it's off buff your nails, DON'T try to rip them or file them off. Sally's beauty supply will have all you need..acetone, cuticle pusher, buffing block...hope it helps
go to a beauty supply and buy 100% acetone not the pharmacy type. leave your nails for about 5 min in that and they wil fall without ruining your nails.
Ok nail polish remover that has acetone in it doesn't do the trick. What you need to do is buy some pure acetone. It is only a few dollars at the store. You can pour the acetone in a bowl and soak your nails while you are watching t.v or whatever. It takes about 15-20 minutes or so for the nails to come off, but it does that trick. That is the only thing that has worked for me.

I did my nails two days ago and they are all chipped and pelling, should I go back to the Nail Shop?

I got a pedicure and manicure on monday afternoon. All I've been doing since then is going to work in an office and going to class. I havent done any hard physical labor or anything and my nails have completely chipped off and cracked. I didnt get tips or fake nails. I got a manicure with painted white french tip. Very simple total for both I payed $40.00. and now my nails are all ugly :(





I got to Vegas tomorrow and I cant go like this.





Should I go back to the nail place? Do they normally chip off so soon? If I do go back, should I pay full price to have them re painted? or should I ask to have them fixed for free? I dont want to be rude to the nail ladies. But my nail seriously are nasty after just 1 1/2 days.

Sometimes the nails shop doesn't do a very good job clean your nail plate before but on the polish or doesn't put the top coat correctly then your nail will chip faster. So the best thing is buy a top coat so when you go home after a mani/pedi, put another coat of top coat on both.

it's the office work! I got mine Saturday and the same thing is happening! mine used to last at least a week but, now that I work in an office and I go swimming it the summer my nails chip faster. You are not the only one. Go to a different less expensive place.

Well as I too have contacts, I understand. Here's what you do, learn to use the sides of you fingertips yo remove your contacts. It takes a little time and practice, but once you get the hang of it, you can have the nails on both of your hands anyway you want it.

However what you CAN do at home to keep your natural nails healthy is to stay away from the fake nails so often. What Do I Do About My Lorikeet's Long Beak and Nails?

My rainbow lorikeet's nails and beak are getting a bit long and I'm concerned about what to do.





He has a cuttlefish bone but lorikeets are known for not taking to cuttlefish bone like other birds are. He hardly touches it. He also has one of those perches that are meant to keet his beak and nails trim and he stands on it a lot but never chews on it or anything.

It's not dangerous at all. I just took 2 of my lories to the vet on Saturday and had their beaks, wings and nails trimmed. My vet is a Certified Avian Vet (a specialty requiring extra study and rigorous testing). He uses a dremel tool. Cutting with snips can cause bleeding but the tool does it gradually.


It's more dangerous to have your bird's nails overgrown. I personally know of a macaw who lost a toe when his overgrown nail got stuck on the cage bar and he fought himself free.


If the beak gets too long they can have problems eating.

What kind of perch are you talking about? I've heard the sandpaper-type perches are not very good for them. The sandpaper scratches not only their nails, but the bottom of their feet, and if they swallow some, it doesn't go too well in their stomach. The best thing is just a natural branch. Depending on how tame your bird is, he might let you cut or file his nails individually (what I was told by my vet), but it's scary if he pulls his legs away, because you think you might cut through their little toes or something. You might need to restrain him with a towel or soemthing, like you would cutting his feathers (if you do that).
try actually cutting his own nail with clippers very lightly and for the beak theirs really nothing you can do about that but just go to the vet if you are scared of cutting his nails he might have a solution for his beak aswell
I had a lorikeet and whenever I took him in for his well-bird check the Vet did his beak and nails with a tool called a Dremel (rotary tool). I think this is a lot better than clippers and my bird was not stressed at all. I was going to buy a Dremel but never did - you have to find out the specific attachment the Vet uses, if you are comfortable learning to use the Dremel yourself.

i used to do that all the timee. rub something really nasty on them, or maybe something really spicy. and keep your mind occupied so you wont think about biting your nails.

it won't hurt anything you touch after its dry but when you chew on it, you'll definitely taste it.
Keep them trim, and filed. Don't let yourself get a foothold into a chipped nail. Most of all, you have to be diligent about this, otherwise it won't work.

read the box. What i do is take out all the nails i'm going to use, because the box usually comes with different styles. Clean your nails really good and make sure they are dry. Then put the glue on the back of the nail and stick it on. Wait a few mintues until they're on good and do your other hand.

They're usually not allowed, but what you can do is you can get natural tips with a clear gel coat on top. It'll look like you just have clear topcoat over your natural nails so they probably wont notice.
Most place will not let you, you need to check with your employer and see what their rules are.

You can start ';trimming'; the sharp ends of the claws about now, actually. But you must be very cautious and slow in doing this. You don't want to risk hurting them, and have them become fearful for this very necessary part of cat care. I always started my kittens when they were about this age.





Only trim the very tips, where the nail is translucent and be careful not to get close to the ';redish pink'; section where the veins and nerves are located. Gently push on the paw until the nail comes out and gently clip it with a cat nail clipper. Then, after each nail, if this were my kitten, give a treat. Do it very slowly, one nail at a time.

You can clip them now, but you must be very careful! Have you ever clipped a cat's nails before? It'll be better for you to clip their nails now because it'll get them used to it.

Although I do suggest that you bring them to the vet to have this done. Just so that you can see how the vet does it so that you can do it on your own next time without hurting the kittens.
In all the time i and my family have owned cats, we have never needed to clip their claws. They will generally get worn down when the are out and about.





If you do feel the need to do so, i would suggest you first go to your vet to get them to show you how to do it.
I don;t know about other people, but I have cut my cat's claws, and they are still sharp, so I would not even bother. Either way, they are sharp, so it is best to leave them alone.
i wouldn't get them cut because what if they get in to a fight with some other cat they will probably be the 1 that will get hurt because they wouldn't be able to attack the other cat
my cats never get their claws cut. i think they either break or when their out climbing trees and stuff they file them down.

It's the gender roles. Only girls are allowed (by society) to wear makeup and decorate their bodies with bright colors.





This is true in our wardrobes too. Next time you go shopping, try finding men's clothes that come in colors other than blues, greys, browns and blacks. It's very difficult.





The irony is that in the natural world, it is the males who have the decorations and the bright colors to attract the mates, and the females who are muted to ensure their survivability.





My own opinion is ';screw it.'; If you want to decorate your body, go right ahead. Have fun and masculinize it so that it will be more acceptable. It is very common for men to get pedicures and manicures that include a clear polish. Soak your nails in diluted bleach and dish soap. Works for almost all stains on nails.

Just make sure that when removing the acrylics, they actually soak them off in acetone instead of ripping them off. Oooo, that's touchy (no pun intended). I used to do it and just clip a little off. Then I took him to the vet to get them clipped once and the vet cut too close and nipped him. From then on he wouldn't let anyone touch his nails or paws. He was a BIG dog, so I didn't push the issue. He's passed on (not from the clipping), so I haven't had to do it in a few years.





I would recommend just clipping a very tiny bit off the top. Dogs nails grind down when they walk and dig, so you don't have to do it all the time. Just don't let them curl under.What is the safest way to clip my dog's nails withouth hurting it?
I would recommend buying a dog toe nail trimmer with a guard on it...it will only allow you to trim a little off at a time. If you get a regular trimmer, you'll want to make sure to trim a little off at a time...and watch for the quick. If you hit the quick it will bleed and hurt, you'll want to have styptic powder on hand if possible to control both...otherwise flour or corn starch will both help the bleeding. If your dog hasn't had them trimmed before, you'll want to play with his feet, nails, etc and reward the dog for staying calm. When the dog is laying down (if possible), get a good hold on the dog's foot and trim the nails. If they're dark, you need to watch for a waxy appearance at the end of the nail...that's when you're close to the quick. If they're clear, you can see the quick. I recommend having someone help you by holding and petting the dog...if the dog squirms at all for you it'll be more difficult.
On a clear nail you can see the ';vein'; or ';quick'; inside the nail. On a black nail, you can't see it until you actually clip the nail. Just clip a very small amount off at a time until you see what looks like a ';Clear'; spot in the middle of the nail. That is the vein or quick. If you go any further, the nail will bleed, which does hurt. Good luck

Dog toenails grow as do human fingernails and toenails. The nails should be kept in good trim to avoid scratching when the dog paws at a bare human leg and to keep the dog's structure as sound as possible. Long nails can cause the dog to rock back on his paws, causing strain on his leg assemblies and interfering with his gait.





The easiest way is to accustom puppies to having their feet handled daily so they'll sit still for this essential part of good grooming. Adult dogs may be more difficult, especially if they hate having their feet handled or have been ';quicked'; at some time.





Sometimes, dog nails grind down if the dog exercises on concrete. Otherwise, the nails should be trimmed regularly. Regular nail trimming is important to your dog's health and well being. Never use ordinary scissors to trim your dog's nails. Use trimmers that are specially designed for dogs. Hold the dog's paw firmly, and cut off the tip of the nail with a single stroke. Be very careful to stop short of the quick, the blood vessel inside the nail. Cutting the nails right after bathing will make the quick more visible; applying baby oil will serve the same purpose. Follow up by filing your dog's nails with a nail file. Ask your vet to show you the correct technique the first time, especially if your dog has dark nails.





Dog nails have a blood supply or quick but the end of the nails are dead tissue and can be clipped without pain. The trick is to trim as close to the quick as possible without actually cutting it and causing it to bleed. The quick appears as a dark line in white nails but is almost impossible to see in darn nails. The best way to begin trimming is to clip only the sharp, curved portion of the nail and then work back a bit towards the paw. Clip only a small bit at a time to avoid trouble.





No matter how careful you are, you can accidentally hit a nail quick and cause some bleeding at some point. Don't panic. Here are some things that will stop the bleeding:





Kwik-Stop (a powder) or any styptic powder. This stings, but is highly effective. Take a pinch of powder and press onto the tip of the affected nail after wiping away the blood.





cornstarch or flour can also be used in a similar manner





you can press the affected nail into a bar of mild soap





for minor problems, simply applying pressure to the tip of the nail may be effective





Some dogs have black nails. To tell how to cut these, turn your dog's paw over and look where the nail has a thicker section than the growth area. Use this as a guideline when trying to figure out where to cut the nail. They won't give the appearance of clearer at the top of the nail, so you have to be very careful that you go by the thickness of the nail when the paw is turned over. Any part of the nail that is thick is the ';Quick'; in this case and should not be cut. This is the part of the nail on the bottom that grows from his paw. The skinnier part of the nail is the new growth, that you can cut without fear of cutting your dog. You can also try using a torch (flashlight) which sometimes shows where the quick is located.





If all else fails, take the dog to your vet and have him/her show you the proper way to do this.

Turn the foot over and look at the underneath of the nail. Some dogs have a hollow area from the tip to the quick, and this part can safely be snipped off. If the nail is white or light colored, you can see the pink quick, or blood supply. Cut in front of this to avoid bleeding. It's a bit trickier in black nails. Use a good clipper, and carefully shave off a little at a time until the middle of the nail begins to turn gray. Shave off a tiny bit more and soon the middle of the nail (the cross section) will show a darker, black spot. This lets you know you are almost at the quick, so stop. Use that nail as a guide for the rest of the nails. Have Kwik Stop powder on hand to pat on the nail should you nip it too short. It will stop the bleeding instantly.

Basically everyone else is right. People trim their cat's claws because they don't want the cat to wear down their claws on their furniture. If you have a scratching post or you don't mind giving your furniture to your kitty, then the problem takes care of itself.

I feel that nail trimmers are just a precaution.


They give people (the dumb people who think that mutilating their cat's fingers by declawing them is a good idea) the option of gentle trimming instead of hacking off claws.





My one cat's back paws are like that. I suppose they only grow to a certain length, because they take proper care in the management themselves.


Cats are designed to scratch. Scratching is a natural behavior to them, not a ';bad'; behavior, like many tend to think.


The scratching is to gently remove the excess nail sheaths that grow around the nail. Over time, if the cat keeps scratching the posts, or toys, or anything else, the nails will naturally take care of themselves.





De-clawing is just for lazy, ignorant jerks who don't feel like taking the 5 minutes to buy a scratching post, and another 5 minutes to trim the nails if they require maintenance.





The cat would only require a nail trim if you never properly trained the cat not to scratch you or the furniture, and the trim would help keep them lower and less sharp, therefore no damage can occur.


I trim my cats' nails for a couple reasons. One, because my little cat still likes to climb up on me, and it can hurt when his nails are long. (He only does that because I don't mind it, so I don't scold him.)Two, because they love to play-fight with eachother, and I don't want them accidentally scratching too hard and hurting eachother.


The rest are managed by proper training.





Your cat sounds perfect though, haha. Since you haven't noticed a reason to trim them, then you don't have to.


Just be sure to check up on her nail grooming once in awhile to make sure that she's getting them enough. Sometimes, one will be too tough to scratch off the sheath, and you need to trim it down so that it doesn't split and cause the cat pain.


(Yeah, a simple hangnail hurts them like heck. You can imagine what de-clawing feels like.)

I don't know, but I cannot stand the razor sharp nails. My cats are trimmed and checked weekly. Cats nails if left untrimmed can cause problems if they catch in fabrics or material - your cat is at risk for serious damage to herself if she ever gets caught and cannot pull her claws out.





You really should be trimming her nails on a weekly basis.
I'm a vet tech and I've seen owners that bring their cats in and they are outdoor cats and their nails are perfectly fine and don't need to be trimmed. If your cat goes out, them scratching on things or even a scratching post helps them stay short.
Cats stratch things and sort their own claws out. I have kept cats for years and never clipped them or had problems with them scratching furniture. I suppose if they lived inside on carpets without a scratching post it might be an issue but I'd leave them be if I were you.
Last I heard, you're not supposed to clip their nails. Cats tend to take care of their claws themselves... that's why they scratch furniture, it helps them wear their claws down.
you're cat probably found something to wear his/her claws out on, so it's not necessary.

You don't really have to get your tips removed. Just have the tips filed down and re-filled so you'll just have overlays.





I started off with tips, and now I just have overlays. They look very good!
Soak them in acetone. The tips will dissolve and then you can just get overlay or whatever you wish. However if they are the same length as your real nails, then you just have the overlay left.
