How long should the acrylic nails be soaked in the acetone?

It depends. Usually about a half hour - minimum, It can take up to an hour though. To speed up the process, remove some of the bulk of the acrylic from your nails by carefully filing the surface of your nails with a 150-180 grit file. Do not file off too much because you could easily begin to file your own natural nails and damage them. Also, excessive filing can create too much heat which can easily damage your nail beds which are rather fragile and easy to damage of you aren't careful. Some people confuse the nail plate with the nail bed. The nail plate is your natural nail. The nail bed is the area underneath your nails which support them and more or less, they hold them in place. Avoid any damage, or trauma to this delicate area.

By filing off some of the bulk of the acrylic, it will speed up the removal time because there is less acrylic to dissolve. But, filing also roughs up the acrylic. Acetone will dissolve a roughed up acrylic nail much quicker than a smooth one. One other thing, filing will remove any UV gel sealer which may have been applied at the salon. Many salons apply this as a finishing touch to make them shiny and to protect them as well. Anyway, acetone does not penetrate the gel, and it will take you hours of soaking before you realize that nothing is happening. You must always remove any UV gel sealer prior to soaking acrylic nails in a solvent based solution. If not, they will not come off. Even if they eventually do, it will take much longer than if you were to simply remove the sealer prior to soaking them. One other thing is that slightly warmed acetone will work faster than cool acetone. Do not warm it in a microwave oven, or on a stove. This stuff is highly flammable. Warm it by placing hot water in a bowl, Then, place a slightly smaller bowl into the bowl with the hot water in it, and pour the acetone into this smaller bowl. The hot water will warm the acetone safely.

There is no time that is official but what I do is let them sit for about 25 minutes and then check if the acrylic is off. If not let them sit for another couple minutes. And if the acrylic is still not off keep adding minutes until the nail is soft again. How long should the acrylic nails be soaked in the acetone?
