Is it okay to leave them as they are...
ps, i do not have a cockateil, i just want to know everything I can before I do get one.I was told I shoudn't cut the nails and wings of cockateils ?
They do need their nails clipped from time to time; if the nails get too long, then they get snagged on stuff and the bird could break its leg trying to get free. As for the wings, this really depends on the people and the house. Not everyone believes in wing clipping, but you should only leave the wings long if you're sure your house is safe for the bird to fly in and it can't get to any doors or windows that might unexpectedly be opened. There's also the danger of a fully-flighted bird crashing full-speed into a wall or something and breaking its neck. Clipping the wings is generally safer, and can also help with taming.
But wings clipped or not, don't ever let your cockatiel near an opened door or window because they're very strong fliers and warm weather is when people often lose their cockatiels outside! It breaks my heart when that happens because I'd be devastated if any of my birds ever flew away, not knowing where they are or when I'd see them again or if they're even still alive, worrying every second...I was told I shoudn't cut the nails and wings of cockateils ?
You shouldn't cut the wings of any bird unless you are very sure of what you are doing. If you should cut them in the wrong place you can get into the growth center I believe it is call and the bird could bleed to death before you could get it stopped. It depends on what you are wanting the cockateil for and how it was raised as to why you might need to have it's wings clipped. If you are wanting to have a pet that you can handle and play with you probably will want to get a hand fed young bird is the best for that. If you are wanting a breeding bird you will not need to worry about it. If you can't find a hand fed young bird and you want to tame it it is advisable to have its wings clipped by either a good bird handler or a vet. When you clip the wings the bird is defenseless and has to depend on you more causing it to bond with you better. If also will not be able to get away from you far so it will be easy to catch. If you have a cat or dog and you have the bird's wings clipped don't leave the cat or dog in the room when you are handling the bird because if the bird should get away from you the dog's or cat's instinct tell it to catch the bird and the bird will be defenceless against them. Once the pet bird starts taming down you should be able to let the wings grow back out. If you take a clipped bird outside be very careful of your surroundings for possible dangers. Cockatiels can be wonderful pets. I have had three with my third still with me and I love them to death. I believe they are the best birds to have for pets. If you are wanting a good talking Cockatiel you will want to try and get a male because the male in the cockatiel family is the talkers. I have had both males and females and both are really sweet birds. Cockatiel are suppose to be one of the cleanest birds to have as pets and after having a few other types of birds I will have to agree. My current pet is a five year old female and she is a real sweety. She will give you kiss and sit on your shoulder but she don't talk much at all. My first cockatial was a male named baby and when we first got him he would pitch a fit when we sat down to eat because he want to eat with you. He could say Pretty bird, baby, wolf whisle, and laugh. Sorry this is so long but I do like cockatials as pets. I have never trimmed my birds toe nails and have never had a problem with them. They naturally weardown and they are greatly needed for the bird's gripping ability.
well u cut the wings if the u suspect the cocktail would fly away when its outside of a cage, ex. u accidentally leave the door open, but if he/she doesnt fly away then u really dont need to. u really shouldnt cut the nails though unless they get really big and/or if they hurt you when the cocktail is on your shoulder or something like that
you can cut the wings so they don't fly away or anything but they grow back
that doesn't mean the whole wing haha just like the tips.
nails should be cut on an bird own
or else they have trouble grabbin onto the sticks pole w/we they stand on.
affect health in ways
JUST CUT ITS WINGS OR TAKE IT TO A PET STORE AND THEY MIGHT DO THAT FOR ONLY $10-$15
